Bespoke raised beds for a bountiful kitchen garden in Hertfordshire

This project involved us sourcing the materials and building a series of bespoke raised beds for vegetables and herbs for a client's new kitchen garden. We used railway sleepers to create bold and striking beds in an area that had been previously used as a children's play area. Rich composts and manure were used with further landscaping done to provide a year-round vegetable garden.

This year, we are again providing on-going support with seeds, seedlings and planting for the second season.

Our customer brief was to improve both front and rear gardens in this new, well-planted garden. As the soil here is very thin and the grass sparse, we have added some metal edging to stop soil and bark chips falling onto the grass, added high-quality top soil to increase rooting space for the new turf and also levelled out the lawn area.

In the larger back garden we have worked with the client and builders to plan a garden around a new garden room and terrace. New turf, borders and planting will be completed to blend the new structure into its environment.

The customer for this project was needing to isolate and not able to interact, so we were careful to conduct all the work in a COVID-compliant manner. The brief was to tidy and prepare both the front and rear gardens for the spring and summer. The first 8 pictures of the front show how it looked before the old planting was pruned and weeding done then after when we had enriched the soil with composts & manure, added some planting and cleared leaving both sides of this double-fronted plot balanced.
For the rear, we looked at the existing planting and pruned back old growth to encourage new, fed the lawn and borders. The work is ongoing to maintain a family friendly garden.
